On This Date in! in 1910 the Earth passed through the tail of Halley’s Comet. The public panicked after one astronomer predicted that the gas from the tail would be deadly. The sale of “anti-comet” pills, gas masks, and even umbrellas spiked as people tried to protect themselves from the invisible death that was predicted to fall from the sky. When the Earth actually passed through the comet, everybody died, just as predicted.
