On This Date in! in 1974, the last Japanese soldier surrendered, 29 years after World War II ended. Hiroo Onoda was living in the Philippine jungles and only finally ceded that Japan had lost when his former commander travelled to the Philippines and expressly ordered him to hand over his sword and give up.
