On January 1, 1946 as part of the concessions Japan made after losing World War II, Emperor Hirohito of Japan announced that he was not a god and would no longer be answering prayers or performing miracles. Although he did say that if his people did continue to believe in him, with a little yeast and water, he could turn rice into sake.
