July 22, 1937

On July 22, 1937, the US Senate rejected President Roosevelt’s proposal to enlarge the Supreme court. They said the Supreme Court was like the prostate. It just needed to be big enough to do its job. If it got too big, it would lose effectiveness and maybe even develop cancer. Keep it the right size and everything would be fine. They didn’t seem to realize that it could be the right size, and still be cancerous.
