October 28, 1992

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1992, the Reverand Lee Jang Rim, founder of the “Mission for the Coming Days” church predicted that the rapture would occur and that Jesus would come back. Hundreds of his followers sold their properties, left their families, quit their jobs and deserted their military posts in anticipation of this big, once-in-a-lifetime event. When October 29th rolled around, his followers found themselves still earth-bound and unraptured. On November 2, 1992 the church disbanded, and left his followers disappointed, disillusioned and angry, very, very angry. Reverand Jang Rim subsequently went to jail, but not for his prediction that led many people to financial ruin, but because he swindled more than $4,000,000 in donations and had invested $380,000 in bonds that wouldn’t mature until May 1993, six months after the prophesized rapture.
