March 29, 1901

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1901 the first federal elections were held in Australia. Two kangaroos and one koala bear won seats in the House of Representatives and Senate, but no women or indigenous people were elected or even allowed to run for office. At the next election, the Aussies decided that it might be a good idea if people weren’t allowed to vote while drunk. As a result of this decision, at the next election the electorate showed up mostly sober and voted in people who might actually try to make the government work, which turned out to be a HUGE cock-up as these people expected the laws they passed to be followed. This made the Aussies very unhappy. At the very next election the electorate showed up drunk as a lord and the government reverted back to their laid-back, easy to get along with nature. Also, more kangaroos and koala bears were elected, but no women or aboriginals. Even the Aussies would only take a joke so far.
