January 24, 1935

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1935, Krueger Brewing Company placed the first canned beer on sale in Richmond, Virginia. Leonard Hogan bought the first six-pack from The Kitchen’s Country Store in Petersberg, Virignia. When he got home, he quickly realized that it would take a can-opener to get at the alcohol locked away inside the impenetrable can. Mr. Hogan didn’t have a can-opener and neither did his wife. She suggested he use the wood-axe outside and he promptly cut off two fingers trying to cut the top off the can of beer. Mrs. Hogan took the axe, tapped the top of the can hard enough so that the axe barely bit into it, levered the axe head out (all this while sneering at her husband) and shot-gunned the entire can of beer. Mr. Hogan, after staunching the blood loss with the torn-off sleeves of his work shirt said, “So, that’s how you do it” promptly slapped his wife to the ground, took the rest of the beer (and the axe) and went inside and drank them by himself, and so the Southern red-neck way of life of drinking beer and wearing a wife-beater was born.
