On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1885, the first successful appendectomy was performed by Dr. William Grant on Mary Gartside. Miss Gartside lived, hence the “successful” appellation. Miss Gartside, also known as “Patient 46” when asked about how she felt about surviving the surgery replied, “Those rotten sons of bitches, they said there be drugs to deaden the pain, they said. They said I’d be happy and drugged up, they said. Those bastards took the opium for themselves, they did. If I was a man with land and money, I’d sue’em I would!”

    All of this “unnecessary organ” talk is really starting to get under my skin, if I had any, which I don’t (being as I am an internal organ), but my point still stands.

    That was a poor choice of words on my part. I just meant stop referring to me as “unnecessary”.
