On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1633, the Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei arrived in Rome for his trial before the Inquisition for writing about and expressing the scientific theory that the earth revolved around the Sun, instead of the Church held belief that the Earth was the center of the universe and everything revolved around it. Galileo lost this mock trial, as there was only one of two possible outcomes. One, he held to his scientific beliefs and he’d be imprisoned and then put to death. Two, he’d recant, have his books burned and then he’d be imprisoned, but left alive. He was told that he should be grateful for living in such liberal times, as in the past, he’d been burned alive for being a heretic, recantation or not. The only reward for recanting, other than to get the torture to stop, would be that he’d be able to go to heaven.
