On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1934, while Washington Senators player-manager Joe Cronin was honeymooning with his wife Mildred Robertson, the niece and adopted daughter of Senators owner Clark Griffith, his contract was sold to the Boston Red Sox. Cronin called Griffith from San Francisco and asked what was going on. Griffith replied, “I love you like a son, Joe, but $250,000 is $250,000.” As a side note, in 1934 the average major league baseball player made between $3,000 to $13,000 a year and the average annual income for everyone else in the US was $1,400 a year. Joe Cronin told Clark Griffith, “Dad, you’ve gotta do what you’ve gotta do,” and he went and became Boston’s player/manager for the next ten years.
