December 28, 1832
On December 28, 1832, John C. Calhoun became the first American Vice President to resign from office. He did so because of differences in ideology with President Andrew Jackson. He believed the rule of law should be followed and Jackson didn’t. When Calhoun resigned he told Jackson, “It’s not me, it’s you.”
