On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY! in 2003 in London, magician David Blaine emerged from a clear plastic box that had been suspended by a crane over the banks of the Thames River since September 5th. He survived only on water for 44 days. His first attempt on September 4th was brought to a quick halt after 18 minutes when his crew realized that his bluish purple coloration indicated that the clear plastic box did not have any air holes. Many of the Londoners who would peer up at Blaine and were asked about Blaine’s magic trick said, “Tisn’t really magic is it? It’s just starving where people can see you, isn’t it?”
