October 16, 1916

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY! in 1916, Margaret Sanger opened the first birth control clinic in New York City. Ms. Sanger, a birth control activist, sex educator, and nurse was subsequently arrested for providing birth control information to the women of New York so that they could decide if and when they wanted to become pregnant. Ms. Sanger told the police and prosecutor that a wife encouraging her husband to develop and keep a mistress was not true birth control, as all she would be doing was transferring her babies to another woman, and the same number of little bastards would still be running around. What they needed to do was reduce the total number of babies being born. Her idea that a good BJ or a quick HJ would be an efficient and pleasurable method of birth control intrigued many of the politicians of that time. Unfortunately the Woman’s Temperance League named her a quack and stated that the methods used to get a husband should cease once the marriage contract was sealed.
