On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1933 Dreft, the first synthetic detergent, went on sale. Many of the rural folk still residing in England were against this newfangled invention and muttered that “Ashes and pig piss was good enough for old grandma, it should be good enough for all”. Ashes and urine when mixed together would form a rudimentary lye and poor farming people would use these easily obtain materials to wash the stains out of their white clothes.
