May 6, 1983

On May 6, 1983, the Hitler Diaries were revealed as a hoax after further examination by forensic experts. The sixty forged journals were sold to the West German magazine ‘Stern’ by Konrad Kujau, a known petty criminal for $3,700,000. ‘Stern’ then sold serialization rights to several news organizations, including the ‘Sunday Times’. They had their own independent historian, Hugh Trevor-Roper authenticate the journals, which  he did and originally pronounced them genuine. At the press conference to announce the publication of the authenticity of the journals, Trevor-Roper said he changed his mind and that they were not Hitler’s diaries. Subsequent rigorous forensic analysis quickly confirmed that they were fake. Trevor-Roper is believed to have said, “Where Hitler single-handedly defeated sapient time-traveling dinosaurs using karate and the power of his singing voice should have alerted me to the fact that they were forgeries.”
