March 9, 1995

On March 9, 1995, the Canadian Navy arrested the Spanish Trawler, the ‘Estai’, for illegally fishing off the coast of Newfoundland. The Captain of the Estai originally thought that it was a joke, as the Canadians were purported to be polite, but when the Canadian warships fired four 50mm warning shots across his bow, he realized the Canadian ships were being piloted by hockey hooligans, so he pulled over. When he was asked about the illegal catch of turbot, a type of fish, on his ship, he tried to explain that he was lost and that he should have taken a left turn at Albuquerque. The Canadians replied that it was duck season, not turbot season and arrested him.
