On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1997 Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company became the first tobacco company to admit that cigarettes are addictive. The executives for Phillip Morris said that the people working for Liggett and Myers were obviously on drugs and nothing they said could be trusted. When Altadis USA, the largest cigar maker in the world, was asked if cigars were addictive, the company answered, “Oh, hell yes. But with something as good and sexy as a Romeo y Julieta, it had damn well better be.”
