On This Date in in 1989 a series of solar flares caused a violent magnetic storm that shut down the power grid over large regions of Canada and caused widespread power outages that prevented literally thousands of Canadians from watching hockey on the television. Nine months later in 1989, during the two week period of December 14 to December 28, a large upspike in births were noticed in Canadian hospitals.
