June 6, 1932

On June 6, 1932, in the United States, the Revenue Act of 1932 was enacted. It created the first gas tax in the United States at a rate of 1 cent per gallon. As was expected, people whined and complained. They said and I quote, “I’ll just stop driving. Why do we need the Federal gubmint to build paved roads anyway? The dirt ones are good nuff. Why can’t the government just keep it’s fingers out of my pocket? This is the beginning of socialism. If I wanted a road, I’d build it myself.” These were just a few of the idiot quotes. Rest assured, there were many others even more idiotic.
