June 16, 1884

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1884 the first roller coaster ride opened in America at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, NY. The ride cost a nickel and travelled at a whomping 6 miles an hour. It was an instant success and people lined up all summer with their nickels in hand. By 1900 there were hundreds of roller coaster built all over the country and they were getting faster, taller and longer.
