January 30, 1647

Charles had lost the English Civil War and had run to the Scots hoping they’d thumb their noses at the English and give him sanctuary. The Scots did, until the English Parliament named and paid a princely sum to their northern neighbors upon which he was handed over kicking and screaming. The Scots just shrugged and said, “A poor king is a mighty fine thing, but 400,000 lbs is 400,000 lbs.”
