On February 27, 1997, divorce finally became legal in Ireland. Up until that time, you had to wait until one of the disgruntled parties in the marriage to die before you could remarry someone else. On February 28, 1997 in a surprising twist, the life expectancy of abusive drunk husbands and wives increased by several years. Dying by getting hit in the head by an ‘accidental’ falling frying pan dropped to third in the leading cause of death of drunken, abusive marriage partners and cirrhosis of the liver jumped up to number one.
