February 22, 1859

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1859 – U.S. President Buchanan approved the Act of February 22, 1859, which incorporated the Washington National Monument Society “for the purpose of completing the erection now in progress of a great National Monument to the memory of Washington at the seat of the Federal Government.”  Vice President John C. Breckinridge giggled when he read it and smirked as he said, “So Washington’s ‘Monument’ is going to be ‘erected’ at the ‘seat’ of the Federal Government.” President Buchanan yelled at him to grow up and act like a Vice President who wasn’t named Aaron Burr.

About Joel Byers

Born in North Georgia and educated at some very fine public institutions. Real education started after graduating from college and then getting married and raising two boys. Has the ability to see the funny and absurd in most things and will always remark on it, even if it means getting the stink-eye from his victims.
