On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1935, Italian bombers destroyed a Swedish Red Cross unit in Ethiopia. Mussolini later apologized and tried to explain by saying that his airplane pilots weren’t very bright, being Italian and everything, and they thought the Big Red Cross was in fact a huge Red X, just like on the maps, so they aimed for it, and wouldn’t you know, was able to hit it almost every time with all their bombs.

    Arrrr and I feel his pain. Imagine me disappointment on lootin’ an plunderin’ the darn things, only to discover that the X did not (as I had been led to believe) mark the location of buried treasure… On a related note, any suggestions as to what I can do with 140 cases of cotton swabs and tongue depressors?
