December 17, 1969

On This Date in! in 1969, the USAF closed Project Blue Book on the orders of National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger. The study that started in 1952 collected over 12,000 UFO reports and concluded that most of them were misidentifications of natural phenomena, such as clouds, stars, and upper air mirages, as well as conventional aircraft being mistaken for flying saucers or cigars. Mr. Kissinger even went on national TV and addressed the nation and explained to the American public that the flash of light they had been seeing in the sky was not UFOs or the prelude to an alien invasion, it was really just some swamp gas from a weather balloon that was trapped in a thermal pocket and it had reflected the light from Venus. After a brief flash of light at the end of Mr. Kissinger’s speech, the American viewing public realized there was no such thing as UFOs and that a Big Mac with a large order of fries would be delicious.
