August 28, 2004

On August 28, 2004, senior citizen, George Brunstad, at age 70, became the oldest person to swim the English Channel. When asked why he did it, he said that his wife Ethel had recently retired and was finding way too many things for him to do around the house. Training for swimming and the actual swimming was the only way for him to get some quality alone time for himself. The swim from Dover, England to Sangatte, France only took him 15 hours and 59 minutes to complete. He said if he’d known he was going to get done so quickly he’d swam on down to Wissant for the extra peace and quiet.
