On this date in in 1998 Canadia’s Supreme Court announced that Quebec could not secede without the federal government’s consent. French Canadians in Quebec immediately laughed and jeered and said, all French-like, “Aha! You bourgeios pigs! That also means that you cannot make us leave without OUR consent.” The Canadian government was quoted as replying, “Well played, Quebec, well played.”
