April 3, 1513

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1513 Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon landed in Florida at 4PM close to St. Augustine. As he landed, he and his crew noticed that the older natives were happily lining up at a building and entering. He decided to join them and found that inside, there was cooked food of all types placed on long tables and everyone was going around and putting what they wanted on their plates. Ponce de Leon asked what this happy place was and the natives told him “Buffet!” Ponce de Leon took this to mean that this style of eating was called ‘buffet’, but unfortunately it was Seminole for “What are you doing here, you bastard!”
