September 8, 1966

On THIS DATE IN TWISTED-HISTORY! in 1966, Star Trek premiered on TV, and the term Trekkie was born. Finally, adolescent teenage boys could put their train sets away and watch space travel with scantily dressed women in mini-skirts and go-go boots come alive on their TV screens in full living color. Green-skinned hot-eyed alien women would dance provocatively for their white-skinned European space explorers, while the one (attractive) African-American woman would answer the space-phone for Captain Kirk and have to be paired with the one Asian dude (who it turns out was gay) and have to sneak into the Captain’s quarters late at night to “make up the bed”. It was ‘good’ to be the Captain in 1966.

About Joel Byers

Born in North Georgia and educated at some very fine public institutions. Real education started after graduating from college and then getting married and raising two boys. Has the ability to see the funny and absurd in most things and will always remark on it, even if it means getting the stink-eye from his victims.
