On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1987, in San Diego, CA, the US Navy use dolphins as a military aid for the first time. The dolphins, Steve and Larry, where used to detect underwater mines and swimmers and report back to their handlers of their presence. For the swimmers, the dolphins would attach a device to the swimmers that would shoot a buoy up the service alerting the navy of their presence. When the navy tried to convince Steve and Larry to attach devices to the mines, the dolphins just laughed and refused. When the Navy finally procured the services of Chim-Chim the talking Chimpanzee to translate for the dolphins, Chim-Chim said that while Steve and Larry would jump through a hoop for free fish, they weren’t stupid and the navy could attach stuff to the mines themselves.
