On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1979, Raul Gonzales of Mexico completed a 50,000 meter walk in a record time of 3:41:38. 50,000 meters is 31 miles, which means he was ‘walking’ at a rate of better than 8 mph, which also means that he was ‘averaging’ a mile every 7 minutes and 8 seconds. If Raul Gonzales had walked the Peachtree Road Race, he would have completed it in 44 minutes. The dedicated amateur runners at the Peachtree know they have run a good race if they complete it in under 45 minutes.
