June 13, 1922

On June 13, 1922, Charles Osborne of Anton, Iowa started something that would outlast his first marriage. He started hiccupping at the age of 29 and wouldn’t stop until 68 years later on June 5, 1990. This is the longest documented case of a person hiccupping non-stop in the world. He was said to have hiccupped on average 40 times a minute when it first started and eventually slowed down to 20 times a minute over the last couple of decades of his life. It is estimated that he hiccupped over 430 million times during his ordeal. After it stopped, it is said that his only regret is that it didn’t last until June 13, 1991. Alas, neither did he, dying in May of 1991, eleven months after his last hiccup.
