July 12, 1954

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1954, US President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed a highway modernization program that would be funded through both the Federal government and the states through which the new, modern “Interstate Highways” would run. Eisenhower and his staff explained that having these highways were essential for the movement of troops in case of any enemy invasion, as well as being a boon for businesses as goods would be moved faster and more efficient throughout America. The construction of the Interstate system was started in 1956 and finally completed in 1992.

A little known fact is that Fort Knox, Kentucky is in the center of a loop created by the Interstates. That loop starts with I-55 from St Louis, MO that travels to Memphis, TN. From there you take I-40 to Knoxville, TN and from Knoxville, you travel on I-81 to Wytheville, VA. From Wytheville, the journey continues along I-77 to Cambridge, OH, where you take I-70 back to St Louis, MO. This loop covers a distance of 1666 miles and will take an estimated time of 24 hours to drive. Since 1992 when the loop was completed, there have been no sightings of UFOs, Bigfoot, or unexplained cases of cattle mutilation. There have been over 107 cases of documented crop circles.
