On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1924, the Russian city of St. Petersburg was renamed to Leningrad. It was changed back to St. Petersburg in 1991 making the following song obsolete.

Leningrad was St. Petersburg
Now it’s Leningrad, not St. Petersburg
Been a short time gone, St. Petersburg
Now it’s a Communist delight on a snowy night
Every gal in St. Petersburg
Lives in Leningrad, not St. Petersburg
So, if you’ve a date in St. Petersburg
She’ll be waiting in Leningrad.

Even Old Mumbai was once New Bombay,
Why’d they change it I can say
The Indians liked it better that way
So take me back to St. Petersburg
No, you can’t go back to St. Petersburg
Been a long time gone, St. Petersburg
Why’d St. Petersburg get kicked to the ditch
That’s nobody’s business but the Bolsheviks.
