On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1849 – English-born Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman in America to receive a medical degree. She attended and graduated from the Medical Institution of Geneva, NY, to the opposition of her fellow students and the general public, although by the time she graduated, she had earned the respect of many of her fellow students. Her medical practice consisted of seeing women and children and she consistently helped poor women and children, as their medical care was practically non-existent. When asked why she didn’t have any men patients, she always replied, “The only thing they’re good for is reproduction and looking pretty and they can see a veterinarian for that.”
