April 5, 1242

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1242 AD the army of Alexander Nevsky of Novgorod (a medieval Russian state) fought a group of the Teutonic Knights at the border of Russia and Estonia. It was fought almost entirely on top of a large frozen lake and only ended when the ice collapsed under several thousand of the Teutonic Knights killing them and giving victory to the Russian, Alexander Nevsky. Contrary to popular belief, this was not the start of modern ice hockey.
