April 14, 1828

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1828 the first edition of Noah Webster’s dictionary was published under the name “American Dictionary of the English Language.” The English ridiculed Mr. Webster’s countrified little work and joked that he didn’t even spell glamour correctly until they realized Mr. Webster’s dictionary had 3,476 more words than their own dictionary. In 1836 the ‘Dictionary Wars’ were officially started when England put out their new dictionary that had over 10,000 words in and officially stated that no new words would ever need to be added as they used every English word known to exist. Six months later, Webster put out his latest edition that had 20,000 words and even included maps. Well played Mr. Webster, well played.
