On January 17, 1966, a USAF B-52 bomber collided with a flying tanker during a mid-air refueling mission over the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain. Both planes exploded, killing their crews and dropped four Hydrogen bombs. Three were found near the fishing village of Palomares, Spain. The bombs did not detonate in a nuclear fireball, but the non-nuclear explosives in two of the bombs did go off and spread plutonium in a 2 square mile area. The fourth bomb was recovered intact in the ocean after a two and a half month search. The US military was happy to find it before the Russians could snag it.
