On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1733 Savannah, GA, was founded by English colonist James Oglethorpe. When he was asked why he named it Savannah, he replied, “Because Mosquito-infected, Humid Ball-Baking, Swamp Crap-hole From Hell was already taken.” When he was politely informed that Mosquito-infected, Humid Ball-Baking, Swamp Crap-hole From Hell was in fact ‘not taken’, he cursed like the sailor he’d become and said, “Well damn, it’s too late to change it now, I’ve already sent notice to the Royals of the name.”

    I hate to have to point out a factual error, especially on a site that is normally so factually accurate, but I really feel that I must.

    As the Mayor of Humid Ball-Baking, Swamp Crap-hole From Hell, I can assure you our town most definitely exists. It might not be the sort of place you’d want to condemn your worst enemy to live in, but it’s real – God help us all, it is so very real.

    By the way, as far as I know, we’re the only town in America where the job of Mayor is selected by a random lottery, and service is mandatory. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind it quite so much, it it wasn’t a lifetime position.

    Anyway, gotta go deal with another broken sump pump, but thanks for your wonderful web site. Reading it every day is the only bright spot in my otherwise bleak and dreary existence.
