July 25, 1946

On THIS DATE IN HISTORY in 1946, the U.S. detonated an underwater atomic bomb at the Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific and on the same day the first bikini bathing suit was displayed on a live model at a Paris, France fashion show. The French fashion designers went wild for the daring two piece swimsuit. Also, at the same time, the bikini was also exhibited at a Paris, Texas County Fair to the general confusion of all present. James Campbell, Chief Judge of the Swimsuit Competition of the best looking egg-plant was upset with Edna Mae Fillon’s choice of the two-piece swimsuit, as last year’s runner-up had been disqualified for having a one-piece that exhibited way too much cleavage. Chief Judge Campbell stated that a swimsuit should accentuate the beauty of the eggplant, not cause such lustful and improper thoughts in a man’s mind. Edna Mae said that if the Chief Judge would raise his eyes and look at a woman’s breasts once in a while, maybe he’d have a proper indecent thought every now and then, instead of the eggplant induced ones he had been having.
