On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1986 – President Reagan signed legislation making Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday a national holiday to be celebrated on the third Monday of January. He did so unwillingly because the proposed law was passed by both the Senate and House with veto-proof majorities. He said he didn’t oppose the holiday because Martin Luther King, Jr., was a black man and was born eighteen years later than himself, he said he opposed it because he didn’t want to give those worthless government workers a paid holiday.
