November 21, 1922

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY! in 1922, Rebecca L. Felton became the one and only women Senator from the state of Georgia. She was appointed to finish the term of the deceased Thomas E. Watson during the special election of his successor, She was sworn in and served 24 hours before the specially elected Walter F. George was sworn in the next day. Senator George allowed Mrs. Felton to be sworn in as a symbol of support for the Women’s Suffrage Movement. As Mr. George said, “It’s 24 hours, what harm can she do? It’s not like we’re giving them the vote or anything.”
