On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1849 Lewis Phectic Haslett of Louisville, KY patented the first gas mask in the United States. His actual patent read, “To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS P. HAsLETT, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Machine for Protecting the Lungs Against the Inhalation of Injurious Substances; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, and will protect you against noxious airs and fumes produced by nature, farm, war, technology and the inability of your brother William Klabasto Haslett to digest corn or meat properly.
