May 19, 1997

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1997 NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) recorded a sound in the Pacific Ocean about 1500 miles of the coast of Chile that has been named “The Bloop”. This sound was so loud that underwater recording devices 3000 miles apart measured it with no loss of volume. This sound was repeated several times over the summer of 1997. Scientist at that time were baffled, as it resembled the sound a very, very, very large animal might make, an animal that must have weighed over 500 tons. The sound was found to have originated very close to 49°51′S 128°34′W.  This is also very close to the location that HP Lovecraft wrote that the sunken city of R’lyeh lay in his story “The Call of Cthulhu”. Coincidentally, Cthulhu is supposed to mass around 500 tons, if he actually existed.
