On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1846 the US declared war on Mexico two months after fighting began. When the US was asked why it took so long to declare war with their southern neighbor, President Polk said war is like a marriage and both partners needed to be sure that they were ready for that serious of a commitment. The US stated that they didn’t want to start a war with Mexico and have Mexico back out at the last minute and decide they’d rather fight Canada or Costa Rica instead, because that would just be embarrassing.
