April 8, 1820

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1820 the famous marble sculpture was discovered on the island of Milos by a peasant, Yorgos Kentrotas, and a French naval officer. The sculpture was in several pieces including parts of her missing arms. It was immediately bought by France and presented to French King Louis XVIII before it was placed in the Louvre. A little known fact about the marble sculpture was that when it was purchased by France, it was not only missing its arms, but the torso which included the naked breasts. In fact, the sculpture would have left the Island of Milos without the torso if the Yorgos Kentrotas’s wife hadn’t forced him to hand the naked torso over to the French just hours before the ship left.
