On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1725 Peter the Great, the Tsar of Russia died. He was best known for modernizing Russia, by force at times, to try and make it as powerful as the other Western European nations. He was succeeded by his wife Catherine I, also sometimes called the Great. She died in 1727 and was succeeded by Peter the Great’s grandson, Peter II. He wasn’t that great as he died at the age of 14 from small pox. Russia didn’t get another emperor named Peter until 1762, when Peter III assumed the Russian throne. He wasn’t that great either as he was emperor for only 6 months, at which point he was assassinated. He was succeed by his wife Catherine II, who was actually pretty good and ruled for 17 years as Catherine the Great, until she too was assassinated on July 17, 1762.
