August 28, 1884

On this date in Twisted-History.com in 1884 the 1st known photograph of a tornado was made near Howard, South Dakota. This was at the same time and area that semi-famous balloonist Dorian Francis Gale disappeared while testing his new high altitude balloon and wasn’t heard from again until he was discovered confused and hallucinating in a wheat field just outside Aberdeen, South Dakota by Frank L. Baum.

About Joel Byers

Born in North Georgia and educated at some very fine public institutions. Real education started after graduating from college and then getting married and raising two boys. Has the ability to see the funny and absurd in most things and will always remark on it, even if it means getting the stink-eye from his victims.

  1. Dorian Francis Gale says:

What I want to know is why I was wearing a dress? Baum said I was wearing it when he found me, but I’m not so sure…

As a noted historian (albeit of the “twisted” variety), perhaps you can shed some light on this mystery. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,
Dorian “Don’t call me Dorothy” Gale
