August 16, 1841

On this date in Twisted-History.com in 1841 an effigy of US President John Tyler was set on fire and burned on the White House lawn. The effigy was set up on the lawn by his own political party, The Whigs, when he vetoed a bill that would have re-established the Bank of the United States. Protesters also threw rocks at the White House and became the most violent White House incident in history. Tyler was subsequently expelled from the Whig Party.

  1. The Ghost of Richard Nixon says:

You’d think if we were going to have a Whig Party, there should also be a Silly Hat Party. Why no Silly Hat Party?

Also, I’m very glad to see more of these Presidential posts, but would still prefer to see a few more about me.

    Sincerely,
Richard M. Nixon (the Ghost of)
