On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1938, New York enacted legislation that required couples to be tested for syphilis in order to get a marriage license. Two years later West Virginia followed suit and offered a free weekend visit to Mrs. Callie’s Bed and Boudoir located in the scenic red-light district of Charleston for all couples who hadn’t yet been exposed to the disease and weren’t already family.
